The Israeli army said Tuesday that a rocket hit Israel from the Gaza Strip for the first time since last month's ceasefire with Palestinian factions.

"Earlier today, a mortar shell fired from Gaza hit Israel," the army wrote on its Twitter account.

"This is the first launch since the end of Operation Protective Edge," it added.

In July, Israel launched a seven-week offensive – dubbed "Operation Protective Edge" – with the stated aim of halting rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.

At least 2,157 Palestinians have been killed – mostly civilians – and nearly 11,000 others injured and thousands of homes destroyed in the onslaught.

Over the course of the offensive, at least 72 Israelis – 69 soldiers and five civilians – have been killed, according to Israeli figures.

The Israeli offensive came to a halt under an August 26 ceasefire brokered by Egypt between Israel and Palestinian factions.
