Put together over the centuries, the collection of gold and silver decorative objects, church vestments and fabrics, and paintings of the Custody of the Holy Land presented in the Palace of Versailles and in the House of Chateaubriand forms a treasure both by its nature and its destination: the celebration of liturgical ceremonies in the churches of the Holy Places of Palestine, mainly Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth.

Testimonials of faith and piety, sumptuous works of art donated by generous patrons, some of the works on display here are unique examples from collections believed to have disappeared. While the Franciscan monks, to whom the Catholic Church has confided the protection of the church of the Holy Sepulchre since the 14th century, may see in these gifts a dazzling homage to their stewardship, these works also form part of a competition between the European Catholic nations, as well as rivalry between Catholics and other Christian churches, for the possession of the Holy Places since the 17th century.
