Visual pollution at the heart of world heritage Troy

Burak Gezen/ Çanakkale, Aug 28 (DHA) - The ancient site of Troy, illuminating the history back 5,000 years in time, has been brought to agenda after construction of a lightening rod that has caused a major visual pollution in the world heritage ancient site.

Located in the Tevfikiye Village in the center of Aegean province of Çanakkale, attracting hundreds of thousands foreign tourists particularly from China, Korea and Japan, the ancient site of Troy has faced a challenge after the site's historic fabric was affected by 'restoration works' of Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The newly installed lightening rod to protect the visitors from stroke of lightening, along with a modern-looking platform made by granite stones in the entrance and interior of site, were slammed to have deformed the historical and natural look of Troy.

Additionally, the fact that the lightening rod has been mounted right on the ancient parliament building has faced criticism by local and foreign tourists. Visitors defended that under the renewal works of the ministry, the modern-looking platform might have topped historical ruins, and called on officials to relocate the new platforms to somewhere else.
