This sultan had catalogues made not only of major libraries but of school libraries in the four corners of the empire, arranged for the repair and rebinding of valuable books scattered among Istanbul’s libraries and sent them to Süleymaniye Library, and established the Imperial Museum. It is no surprise that someone with such interests and receptive to new technology should have been fascinated by photography, which was introduced in Istanbul soon after its invention in 1839 and brought to the attention of the Ottoman sultans.Foreign photographers were later joined by Ottoman photographers, and guided by the interests of Sultan Abdülhamid II, a collection of 36,535 photographs contained in 911 albums was created at Yıldız Palace Library.Royal interest in photography continued with subsequent Ottoman rulers. As well as photographs commissioned by the sultans, photographers presented albums of photographs they had taken on their own initiative in various parts of the empire to the palace and members of the ruling classes.Following the foundation of the Turkish Republic, the large library established by Sultan Abdülhamid II at Yıldız Palace was presented to Istanbul University Library in 1925 at Atatürk's request.Yıldız Palace Library was dismantled according to a plan drawn up by experts and all its furniture and contents moved to the new building, where it was reinstalled. This magnificent library consisted of more than 7000 manuscripts and around 1500 printed books. In addition it contained 43 albums of engravings, 25 scrolls, 23 coloured and 10 black and white lithographs, 1 ceramic picture, 1 picture painted on marble, 16 collections of stamps, watercolours in the form of 24 single sheets and albums, 16 books of music, 5 collections of fabrics, 2 collections of visiting cards belonging to foreign visitors, 1 plant collection, 4 pencil drawings and a collection of maps and plans. There was also a porcelain collection that included pieces produced at the Imperial Porcelain Factory established by Sultan Abdülhamid II in the grounds of Yıldız Palace.
