The EU urged Russia Thursday to keep its natural gas supply commitments after the country's state-owned Gazprom signed a 400 billion gas deal with China's National Petroleum Corporation, which will see Russia supply China with natural gas for the next 30 years.
Sabine Berger, spokesperson for the EU's Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger, said that energy suppliers have a responsibility to respect and maintain their arrangements and contracts and pointed out that Europe is still an attractive and reliable market for Russian gas.
Since the crisis in Ukraine the EU has been reevaluating its energy dependency on Russian gas.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, China is the world's largest energy consumer with an economy growing about 10 percent per year over the last 10 years.
