– Following nationwide protests and university closures for more than a week, students in South Africa have gain a victory against the attempts of the government to increase university fees.

Students marched to the Parliament in Cape Town on Oct 23, to await the President Jacob Zuma's decision over the protests that have shaken the social media with the #feesmustfall hashtag. It was announced by the media on Friday afternoon that President Jacob Zuma has agreed to a 0 percent fee increase for university students in 2016.

South African students have rejected a 6 percent cap on fee increases proposed for 2016, down from the 10 to 12 percent, by the management of universities. Students have been protesting against the hike in fees for more than a week, while students have accepted a call from the South Africa Students Congress for a shutdown of universities. On Tuesday, some 23 students have been arrested at the University of Cape Town, charged with disrupting the peace, while clashes accelarated with police.

As the ongoing protests accelerated, the #NationalShutDown hashtag replaced the various #FeesMustFall hashtags on social media posts regarding protests at the University of the Witwatersrand‚ University of Fort Hare‚ Rhodes University and the University of Cape Town.
