Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said data from allies showed that Turkish information that a downed Russian jet violated the Turkish air space.
"We stand in solidarity with Turkey, support its territorial integrity" the NATO chief said after an emergency meeting in Brussels.
There has been no direct contact between Russia and NATO so far, he said, adding that Ankara and Moscow have already contacted.
He called for more contact.
The situation is serious and tensions should be eased, he said, adding that measures should be taken to prevent any repetition of such an incident.
"The common enemy is ISIL," he said, referring to the Islamic State, adding that Russia should be guided by that. - Brussels
