There is no city in history more evocative of the imagination than Troy. Since the famous poet Homer wrote this Iliad and Odyssey in the 8th century BC, many others have studies, reinterpreted, sung about and laid claim for themselves to the city, the war between the Greeks and the Trojans, and the famous Wooden Horse. Roman emperors and European royalty traced their 'roots' to Trojan or Greek heroes. Alexander the Great visited Troy before he embarked on his conquest of the East, and centuries later Sultan Mehmed II visited the city after taking Constantinople.
