Cinderella'nın Sesi Tom Keifer ile Röportaj

Mahmut Saral - - Cinderella grubunun gitaristi ve solisti olan Tom Keifer, kısa süre önce çıkardığı solo albümü The Way Life Goes ile gündemde. Yıllar içinde birçok kez ses telleriyle ilgili sorun yaşayan Keifer, "İnsanı öldürmeyen şey güçlendirir" diyor ve yola devam etmeyi seviyor. Cinderella grubuyla 25. yılını geride bıraktı ve solo albümüyle de şu günlerde oldukça mutlu. Bu teknolojik çağda albüm satmanın ve yeni yeteneklere yol açmanın zor olduğunu düşünüyor ve belki de önümüzdeki günlerde onu ülkemizde de izleyebileceğiz...

Mahmut Saral (TeknoKulis): Tom Keifer olarak tek başına ve Cindrella'da harika işler yaptın. Ancak seni uzun süredir bekliyoruz ve özledik. Gerek tek başına verdiğin solo konserler, gerekse de Cinderella grubuyla beraber verdiğin 25. yıl konserleri etkileyiciydi gerçekten. Peki bundan sonra ne olacak? Yeni bir Cinderella albümü için herhangi bir fikir var mı?

Tom Keifer (TK): Çok teşekkür ederim. Şu an tamamen yeni albümüm The Way Life Goes'un tanıtımı üzerinde çalışıyoruz. Bizim için harika bir yıl oldu. Konserler verdik ve hayranlarımızla buluştuk. Şu an 2014 konserleri üzerinde çalışıyoruz ve bu yeni albümün tanıtımını yapmaya devam edeceğiz. Daha yeni başladık ve dahasını umuyoruz.

Yeni bir Cinderella albümü için ise, bu yoğunluk içinde konuşmak zor.

TeknoKulis: Harika bir vokal ve aynı zamanda gitaristsin. İki işi bir arada yapma fikri nasıl ortaya çıktı?

TK: Büyük gitaristleri ve solistleri her zaman sevdim. Jimmy Page'den Joe Walsh gibi geleneksel blues sanatçıları. Solistlere geldiğimizde, Steve Mariott, Robert Plant, Rod Stewart and the Faces, Janis Joplin. Gerçekten kimsenin beni ikisi için etkilediğini düşünmüyorum. Aslında sadece bir gitaristtim başta. Gençken biri "Hey sen, dene şunu" demişti. Vazgeçmeye niyetli değildim sanırım.

TeknoKulis: Sesinle ilgili problemler yaşamıştın, şu an nasılsın?

TK: Sanırım her şeyin bir sebebi var. vokal problemime iyi gelecek hiçbir şey bulamadığım zamanlar oldu, ama şimdi geçmişe baktığımda, sesimi alıştığımdan farklı kullanmayı öğrendim. Bu, benim daha uzun turlar yapmama ve eskisinden daha yoğun bir programla çalışmama olanak sağladı. Sanırım bazı şeylerin çözülmesi zamana bağlı. Daha önemlisi, seni öldürmeyen güçlendirir, değil mi?

TeknoKulis: Solo albümün, The Way Life Goes hakkında neler hissediyorsun? Tepkiler nasıl oldu?

TK: Bu, çok özel ve kişisel bir kayıt oldu benim için. Ayrıca eşim Savannah ve bir arkadaşımız Chuck Turner da bu kayıtta ortak yapımcıydı. TeknoKulis: Solo olarak veya Cinderella ile bir Avrupa turnesi düşünüyor musun?

TK: Avrupa ve Türkiye'ye gelmekten mutlu oluruz, ancak önümüzdeki yılın neler getireceğini birlikte göreceğiz.

TeknoKulis: Gelecek için solo veya Cinderella olarak planlar var mı şu an?

TK: Az evvel de dediğim gibi, şu an odağımda sadece bu yeni albüm var. Çalışmaya devam edip daha fazla insana ulaşmasını istiyoruz. 10 yıllık bir çalışmanın ürünü bu albüm ve şu an tadını çıkarmaya çalışıyorum.

TeknoKulis: Nobody's Fool ve Shake Me gibi videolarda bir senaryo vardı. Eğer yeni bir Cinderella albümü gelirse, bu video serisini yıllar sonra devam ettirmeyi düşünür müsünüz ekipçe?

TK: Bu videolar gerçekten zamanına özel şeylerdi. Hazırlarken çok eğlenmiştik, ama bu temayı devam ettireceğimiz konusunda emin değilim.

TeknoKulis: 2013 yılındayız ve rock müziğinin yıllar içinde değişimi hakkında ne düşünüyorsun?

TK: Gerçek rock, bir şekilde her zaman yolunu bulur. En büyük değişiklik, sektörün kendisinde. Bizim MTV gibi görsel noktalara ihtiyacımız yok. Bu teknolojik çağda albümleri satmak çok zor, ama benim için en büyük değişiklik, sanatçı gelişimi tarafında. Yeni yetenekler bulmak ve onları geliştirmek çok zor. Müziği en çok bu etkiliyor.

TeknoKulis: 80'ler ve 90'larda birçok grubun görsel tarzı dikkat çekiciydi. Özellikle havalı saçlar, yarı çıplak sahne performansları, makyaj ve benzeri şeyler. Ancak yıllar geçtikçe bu görsellik de değişti. Sence bunun sebebi neydi?

TK: O zamanlar tarz öyleydi. Ne kadar kabaysa o kadar iyi. Olumsuz yanı, çoğu için görünüş müzikten daha önemli hale gelmişti. İkinci albümde, moda açısından ordan bayağı uzaklaşmıştık. Amacımız, yazar ve müzisyen olarak olgunlaşmaktı tamamen. Müzikte bizim için en temel hedef, her zaman büyümeyi ve gelişmeyi görmekti.

Mahmut Saral [TeknoKulis): You did awesome as Tom Keifer and Cinderella. But we wait you such a long time and miss you too. You are really amazing in your lastly concerts and also your 25th Year Tour, and solo concerts... Really really affected us. Can you tell us what will you do after thats? Is there any idea of Cinderella about new album?

Tom Keifer (TK): Thank you so much. Right now we are completely buried in the promotion of The Way Life Goes. It has been such a great year for us being out on the road with this record, meeting the fans, and just becoming a band. As far as anything new, We are currently in the planning stages of a tour for 2014- to continue the promotion of the new record. We are hoping to cover a lot more ground. We are just getting started. As for a Cinderella record, It is hard for me to think about any new project while in this whirlwind. I never rule anything out. I tend to take life as it comes and if something is meant to be the opportunity will present itself.

TeknoKulis: You are a great vocalist and also guitarist. But how do you get the idea of being both of them? Is there anyone who gives the idea to you?

TK: I always loved great guitar players and great singers. From Jimmy Page and Joe Walsh to traditional blues players. As for singers, It is pretty well documented that I love Steve Mariott, Robert Plant, Rod Stewart and the Faces, Janis Joplin. I don't really think anyone inspired me to do both. I originally was a guitar player and at one point in my youth someone said, '"Hey you try it." From that point on, I guess I wasn't willing to give either up.

TeknoKulis: Whats your fellings about your ilness factor which causes break on your music career and whats your feelings now?

TK: I think everything happens for a reason. At the time, I could not find anything good in any of my vocal problems but looking back, I have learned to use my voice in a very different way than I used to. It allows me to do longer tours and work a more difficult schedule than I could at first.

I think it was part of the timing of how things unfolded too. Most of all, What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Right?

TeknoKulis: Your solo album, The Way Life Goes. Whats your feelings about that album? How feedbacks from you fans?

TK: This is a very special and personal record for me. I co-produced the record with my wife, Savannah and a friend of ours Chuck Turner. It was a very slow process because of the vocal issues I had but we still had a lot of fun making it. It represents winning over something that I wasn't supposed to. Every song reminds me of a time period during the making of the record. Some happy, some pretty dark. The reaction of the fans has been beyond what we imagined.

TeknoKulis: Any tour for Europe, solo or with Cinderella? We want to you see in Turkey!

TK: We would love to bring this to Europe and Turkey. We'll just have to see what next year brings.

TeknoKulis: What future plans do you have for Cinderella band (or solo continue)? We are waiting a new album!

TK: Like I said earlier, the only thing on the radar right now is promoting this record. There is still a lot of ground to cover and people who haven't heard this record yet. The Way Life Goes took ten years to make and I am trying to savor this one right now.

TeknoKulis: Nobody's Fool video continues the scenario of Shake Me video. Two of them were amazing songs and videos. After all this years, when a new Cinderella album released, can there be another song with video which will follow this two's scenario? I think as a fan that would be great? Do you think so?

TK: Those videos are really time stamped with when they were created. They were a lot of fun to make but I'm not sure we would stay with that theme. If we were to do anything, it would be more representative of where everyone is now.

TeknoKulis: The year 2013 and how do you think rock music has been changed in years?

TK: Real rock always finds a way of creeping in. The biggest changes are the industry itself. We don't have the visual outlets like MTV. It is much more difficult to sell records in this technological age but to me the biggest change is in artist development. It is much more difficult for new talent to find someone to develop them and stick with them for any period of time. This really affects the music the most.

TeknoKulis: In 80s and 90s Appearance of the bands -especially hair, hard rock bands- was really eye catching. You know long and glorious hair, make up, half naked shows and etc. however this time most bands left this style. What are the reasons of this change according to you?

TK: It was the style of the time. The ruder the better but the unfortunate side of that is that it became more about looks than the music for some. By the second record we had really steered away from that from a fashion standpoint. It was completely about trying to mature as a writer and as musicians for us. The ultimate goal musically for us was to always see growth.
