Thermal power plants in Turkey burned more than 50 million tonnes of coal in January-September period, 30 percent above in the same preiod of last year, as the country concentrates on thermal power to lower the energy costs, seen as the main reason for high current account deficit.
Thermal power plants used 6.4 million tonnes of coal in September 2014, around 15 percent hard coal and the rest lignite, more than 70 percent the coal used in the same month of last year, according to the data released by Turkish Statistical Institute, on Wednesday.
The coal burned in the thermal power plants in the first eight months of the year rose by 30 percent to 52.7 million tonnes, up from 40.7 million tonnes, against the same period in 2013.
BIG SHARE FOR POWER PLANTS
Distribution of solid fuels according to breakdown of main delivery places were 35.7 percent to thermal power plants, 19.6 percent to coking plants, 8.5 percent to industry except, iron and steel industry.
The distribution for hard coal, 90.1 percent to thermal power plants, 4.9 percent to industry except iron and steel industry, for lignite and 97 percent to iron and steel industry for coke derived from hard coal. - Istanbul
