(Video) Ataturk Airport turns into hotel due to heavy snow
İbrahim Yıldız/ Istanbul, Dec 31 (DHA) - Istanbul's major Ataturk Airport has turned into a hotel hosting passengers whose flights were cancelled or delayed due to heavy snow, on Dec. 31.
Turkish Airlines has announced cancellation of 221 flights from Istanbul's Ataturk and Sabiha Gökçen Airports, while Turkey's Pegasus Airlines has cancelled at least 33 flights.
Airlines companies have offered passengers a stay at the hotels nearby. However, some of the passengers preferred to wait at the airport. Footages showed passengers sleeping on terminal seats.
Meanwhile, State Airports Administration (DHMI) deployed 'snow teams' and formed a 'crisis center' to 'fight the snow' which struck Istanbul ahead of New Year's Eve.
A 'snow team' de-iced the airstrip against icing with special vehicles, while teams boosted efforts to prevent further interruption in flights with snow plough vehicles, graders, breaking action measuring tools.
