Fatih Daldal/ Çanakkale, Sep 30 (DHA) - In the cave of Shepherd Paris on Mount Ida, a local tourist discovered names engraved on the walls, predicted to belong to famous British archaeologist Frank Calvert, in Aegean province of Çanakkale.
Calvert is known as the first archaeologist having carried out excavation works in world renowned ancient site of Troy, between 1863 and 1865, located in Çanakkale.
Trace of the 18-year-old Frank Calvert
The names scratched on the wall are predicted to date back 169 years history, where possibly Calvert and his family had visited the region. It is also anticipated that Calvert was only 18 years old when he visited the cave, in 1846, and he was with his brothers during the visit. The young man who has found the traces, 28-year-old Cemil Darıcı, was wandering in the region, within his visit to Mount Ida where his wife has grown up.
Some written sources also partially confirm Calvert, son of a family with 7 children, had been organizing trips to Çanakkale area and had been hunting on Mount Ida.
