A video showed fishermen in Kuşadası resort town rescuing a toddler in a lifejacket in the sea, facing death after a migrant boat capsized off Aegean province of Aydın, on Oct. 21.
Two migrants have been left killed and 16 others have gone missing in two separate accidents in the Aegean Sea, when boats heading to Greece from Turkey capsized. Some 15 migrants in the boat were rescued while 15 others were missing as of Oct. 22, while Turkish coast guards continue their work to find the missing migrants
The men were fishing when they noticed the 18-month-old baby floating in the water, in a life jacket. Then, they saw a group of refugees floating in their life jackets.
"We suspected hypothermia for the baby"
While the fishermen first thought the baby, pale and cold, has already died, they noticed baby Mohammad was alive and making sounds. The baby was pulled off the water by the fishermen, who struggled to save him with initial intervention.
"The baby was all pale. We suspected a hypothermia, as the baby was cold and his hands, feet were all white. He was frothing at the mouth. We covered the baby with a blanket, tried to rescue him. Following our call, a tow boat from the Aegean Harbor arrived at the scene to help us, then the boat took the baby to Kuşadası" said the captain of the boat, Recep Evran.
Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi to baby Mohammad Hasan
The toddler, identified as Mohammad Hasan, has been in good health, hospitalized to İzmir State Hospital after a brief treatment in Kuşadası, local reports said. His mother keeps waiting at the hospital.
The witnesses of the deadly event added, they have helped other 15 people to get on their boat, after they noticed a group of migrants, most of them women, floating in their lifejackets and crying for help.
"They were trying to explain with hand signs that there were 30 people in the water, those others are deep at the bottom of the sea, we think" the captain added, urging they believed there were around 15 others in the Aegean waters, that day. The group who has waited around four five hours in the water included a pregnant baby, the witness said.
The dead body of a four-year-old Syrian Kurdish boy Aylan Kurdi has hit the shores of the Turkish resort Bodrum, following a migrant boat tragedy and Kurdi has become a tragic symbol of the Syrian refugee influx to the EU.
